Panasonic unveils Lumix CM1 cameraphone, complete with 1-inch sensor

Panasonic has just unveiled its new venture into the Android world, the Lumix CM1 cameraphone. Panasonic has been gone from the smartphone market for two years following the disaster that was the Eluga line of devices, but now the Japanese company is back with an intriguing new device that pairs high-end camera specs with an Android smartphone.

The Panasonic Lumix CM1 carries with it powerful features like a 1-inch sensor with a 20-megapixel resolution and an f/2.8 Leica lens. That 1-inch sensor size is a vast improvement over other phone’s sensors and is on par with cameras such as the Sony RX100. Paired with a manual control ring, mechanical shutter and 4K video capture, the camera on the Lumix CM1 easily surpasses all other smartphones.

On the smartphone half of the hybrid, the Panasonic Lumix CM1 packs specs that would be considered respectable in a high-end Android phone. The Lumix CM1 features a 4.7-inch 1080p display, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 2600mAh battery, Android 4.4 KitKat and 16GB of storage supplemented by a microSD card slot that can support cards up to 128GB. All in all, a solid list of specs that makes the Lumix CM1 even more of a temptation.

The Lumix CM1 certainly looks like more of a camera than a smartphone, and in reality, it is. For those who highly value image quality on the go, the Lumix CM1 could be a great choice. Pansonic is exclusively launching the Lumix CM1 in France and Germany for 900 Euros, or about $1,150 USD. From there, Panasonic will look at the viability of bringing it to other countries based on its success.
