Qualcomm releases more Snapdragon 855 details

Yesterday, Qualcomm announced its new Snapdragon 855 processor, the flagship mobile platform for the first wave of 5G smartphones. Today, the company is releasing more details on its latest chip. Most notably, the Snapdragon 855 will come paired with an X50 5G modem that will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz technology. In addition to 5G, the chip’s X24 LTE modem will support multi-gigabit 4G LTE connectivity, giving users the fastest network speeds whether they’re on 5G or 4G LTE.

Qualcomm is outfitting the Snapdragon 855 with its new Kryo 485 CPU, which it says will deliver a 45% performance increase over previous generations. That powerful CPU will provide power alongside an Adreno 640 GPU that is 20% more powerful than the current generation. Plus, the Adreno 640 GPU provides support for HDR and physically based rendering while gaming.

For those concerned about the camera, Qualcomm’s latest ISP adds some serious benefits for video. Powered by hardware accelerated computer vision, the new ISP can record 4K HDR at 60fps while processing depth in real time. Plus, it supports video recording using the HDR10+ standard. Best of all, it does all of this with four times the power efficiency of its predecessor.

Other improvements include support for HDR10+ video playback, support for virtual reality at 8K resolutions, improvements to the AI processor, and support for 10Gbps Wi-Fi connections.
