HTC wants to revive itself with mid-range, high-end smartphones
HTC may be down on its luck, but the Taiwanese tech company is hoping to revive itself in 2019. President Darren Chen has discussed his plans for the company, which are centered around a reboot through the creation of mid-range and high-end smartphones. The company kicked off this initiative with the recently-released Desire 12s, a mid-range smartphone with modest specs and an affordable pricetag.
The next phase for HTC is to release a new high-end smartphone. To this end, HTC is extending the lifespan of its U12+ line. The U12+ launched in summer 2018 and received favorable critical reviews. The flagship was followed up by the U12 Life this November, which HTC says has seen strong sales. Additionally, the HTC Exodus 1, a blockchain-enabled smartphone, sold out after it launched in early December.
To cap off its turning luck with smartphones, HTC is noting the increasing success of its Vive VR headsets. In particular, the Vive Pro and Vive Focus have both seen success as the line is fleshed out. To satisfy purchasers of these products, HTC is aiming to aggressively expand the Viveport VR app store into a hub for VR content.
While HTC’s success remains to be seen, we’re interested to follow along on the company’s journey. This isn’t the first time that HTC has attempted to stage a comeback, but in the past year, the company has streamlined and focused on creating high-quality products that appeal to specific market segments. In 2019, we’ll see if that approach pays off.
