Google Pixel 3 is the top-ranked single-lens Android phone, says DxOMark

Ever since its launch, the Google Pixel 3 has gotten praise for its excellent camera performance. Now DxOMark has weighed in with its official analysis of the Pixel 3′s camera.

DxOMark has given the Pixel 3 a score of 101 points, which makes it the top-ranked single camera Android phone and ties it with the iPhone XR for best overall single camera phone. “With the Pixel 3, Google continues to make impressive gains in image processing using computational imaging,” the report says. “The result is a very versatile camera that people can confidently use in most situations without any manual settings or tweaks.”

The Pixel 3 offers extremely fast autofocus, DxOMark says, and offers very good detail preservation and flash. The biggest improvements have been made to the Zoom and Bokeh features, though, which are said to be much better than they were on the Pixel 2 thanks to the better computational imaging used by Google. Bokeh offers more even and natural background blur, though it can still be fooled by some complex scenes, like where the subject is leaning on something in the background.

Video performance has been improved on the Pixel 3, too, says DxOMark. Video color rendering in particular has gotten better, and detail preservation in video is described as “excellent”, as is the video autofocus.

Of course, the Pixel 3′s camera isn’t perfect. DxOMark says that when it comes to photography, some luminance noise is visible, especially in lowlight conditions, and that the phone can lose some detail in darker portions of high dynamic range scenes. Some ghosting and color fringing can also sometimes be found, according to this report.

One other detail worth mentioning is that DxOMark’s report does not include analysis of Google’s Night Sight feature, which helps you take better low-light photos without a flash. “It is important to note that we test all smartphones using only their default settings,” DxOMark explains, “so we did not consider the image results from the Pixel 3’s Night Sight mode in our DxOMark scores.”

As we mentioned before, the Pixel 3 has earned a lot of praise for its camera performance, so it’s no surprise to see it earn a high DxOMark score. This report is still an interesting read because it offers a deep dive into the Pixel 3 camera’s capabilities, though, as well as lots of comparison photos with other flagship phones, so it’s worth checking out if you’ve got a Pixel 3 or are at all interested in the device.
