Pixel Stand delivers wireless charging and turns your Pixel 3 into a mini Smart Display

Wireless charging fans will be thrilled that after 4 years Google has finally seen fit to bring it back to its devices and with it comes the Pixel Stand.

The Pixel Stand offers a 10W charge to your Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL and can charge your device in either portrait or landscape mode. It is using standard Qi charging, so you are free to use it with other Qi compatible devices.

Google is bringing a little more to the table than just a charger, the Pixel Stand basically turns your Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL into a Smart Display with a number of clever features to go with it.

The phone can display albums from your Google Photos as it charges, just like a Smart Display. It will similarly function as a receiver for a Nest Hello video doorbell if it is on the charger.

If like most of us you use your phone as your alarm clock the Pixel Stand delivers some great features like an ambient lighting wakeup procedure (on the screen only of course) that should brighten a dark room gently as you get close to the alarm going off.

The phone also enables Google Assistant, again naturally allowing it to take the place of either a Google Home Mini or Smart Display on your bedside table or desk.

While I would have liked to see it come in a little cheaper, I’m glad that Google did a little more with it’s wireless charger than simply something to plop your device on and let it charge.
