Google Pixel Slate announced with pricing, wait list available now

The Pixel Slate might be the device that I’m most excited about today as Android tablets have been such a wasteland in recent years with little to no attention from Google to support those that have continued making solid hardware.

The Pixel Slate looks to blur the lines between desktop and mobile, naturally running Chrome OS the full Chrome browser is present with the ability to fire up as many tabs as you want and surf the web exactly as you would normally.

Google also talked about the ability to run development tools and Linux, making it clear this isn’t meant to be merely a consumption device.

But what about when you do want to just consume content? Google definitely addressed that to with the 12.3-inch 293 pixel per inch display, this is a significant step up from the 264 offered by the current iPad Pro lineup. They brought on a number of YouTube creators and filmmakers that naturally had great things to say about watching their content on the Pixel Slate. The tablet also features two front-firing stereo speakers.

Security was, of course, a part of the discussion with the Pixel Slate and Google talked up the built-in virus protection as well as automatic updates that occur in the background. The Titan Security chip keeps your data safe on the device and the fingerprint sensor built into the power button provides the physical security on the device.

Naturally, for a device that is meant for more than just content consumption you will need a keyboard and the Pixel Slate Keyboard delivers with a keyboard that snaps on with a folio form factor with an infinite hinge. There’s no charging or pairing process, it simply snaps on and you are ready to go. It’s a full-size backlit keyboard with rounded “hush” keys that will make you the envy of current MacBook Pro owners presumably.

Pricing details were a little hazier, the Pixel Slate will start at $599 with multiple configurations available all the way up to $1,599 for a Core i7 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Pixel Slate Keyboard is $199, which sounds a little rough, we’ll have to get our hands on it before we can say whether it lives up to the pricing. The new Pixelbook Pen is $99, so updated hardware with the pricing staying the same.
