OnePlus 6T won’t feature wireless charging or IP rating

In the year 2018 there are some features that some people expect to be in smartphones, but some companies aren’t worried too much about that.

OnePlus is one such company, at least as far as wireless charging and IP ratings for water and dust resistance are concerned. In a new interview with CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau goes into some more detail about a few aspects of the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6T, elaborating on a phone that has been leaking out on a semi-regular basis as of late.

We already know that the phone is going to have an in-display fingerprint sensor. To get that feature in the phone, the OnePlus 6T had to get a bit thicker (0.45mm thicker than the OnePlus 6), and the handset had to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. But while the company is willing to make the phone a bit bigger to facilitate one method we use to unlock our phones, apparently that trade-off isn’t worth it for something like wireless charging just yet.

While Lau says that OnePlus is investigating the best way to implement wireless charging into its smartphone lineup, it has yet to find a way to get that technology to match the Dash Charging feature. Lau says wireless charging needs to be at least as good as Dash Charging before OnePlus will implement it in its smartphones.

And while some customers look for an IP rating when searching for their new phone, something like IP68-rated for water and dust resistance, OnePlus says it’s not worth the costs to go through the full IP certification. Lau says that there isn’t a lot of people taking their phones into the pool for a swim, and says that the OnePlus 6T’s ability to withstand a few splashes of rain water or a quick dip into a sink is good enough.

So no wireless charging or an IP rating for water and dust resistance. Turns out the OnePlus 6T is going to cost at least $27 more than the OnePlus 6, too. Are you willing to buy a new phone with these features missing?
