Twitter will soon let you easily switch to a chronological timeline

Twitter made a major change to its service back in early 2016 when it rolled out an algorithmic timeline that showed you tweets that it thinks you’d be most interested in. Since then, some other tweaks have been made and some users have called for a return to the old reverse chronological feed. Now Twitter is making a change that should make those people happy.

Twitter announced today that it’s “working on new ways to give you more control over your timeline.” Specifically, it’s working on a way to let you easily switch between a timeline of tweets relevant to you and a feed of the latest tweets. This feature will be tested in the coming weeks.

For now, Twitter is updating its “Show the best tweets first” setting. When you toggle this setting off, you’ll only see tweets from people you follow in reverse chronological order. This means you’ll no longer see the “In case you missed it” section and recommended tweets from people you don’t follow. This setting will be replaced when the aforementioned easier-to-access switch rolls out.

5/ Meanwhile, today we updated the “Show the best Tweets first” setting. When off, you’ll only see Tweets from people you follow in reverse chronological order. Previously when turned off, you’d also see “In case you missed it” and recommended Tweets from people you don’t follow.

This is sure to be a welcome change for many Twitter power users out there, as it’ll get them closer to the way Twitter used to be, giving you a reverse chronological feed without extra tweets popping up from accounts that they don’t follow. To flip the “Show the best tweets first” toggle off, go into the settings, select “Content preferences”, and flip the toggle in there.
