Toyota reportedly ready to add Android Auto in its cars
Toyota has been reluctant to jump on board with third-party infotainment options for its automobile fleet, avoiding Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto for years.
But the company has started to steer away from that train of thought, starting with finally adding CarPlay support in the 2019 Avalon earlier this year. And now Bloomberg reports that Toyota’s blackout of Android Auto may be coming to an end soon. The publication says that Toyota may make an official announcement for Android Auto supports in its vehicles as soon as October.
Nothing is official just yet. A spokesperson for Toyota did comment on the story, though, saying that the company is aware that there is high demand for Android Auto and that they are considering “direct connection” with the in-car entertainment feature but that there isn’t anything else to add at this time. So while Toyota is still considering it, this report indicates that the decision is ready to be announced sometime next month.
Back in April it was reported that at least one of the reasons Toyota was avoiding Android Auto was due to security concerns, with reports at the time saying Google collected a wide range of data about a driver and the automobile. However, Google denied those claims at the time.
Either way, it appears that Toyota is finally moving in the right direction, and fans of the car brand might have something to look forward to in the Android Auto department very soon.
