Google Play Points loyalty program may be in the works

Do you buy a lot of content from the Play Store? Soon, Google may begin rewarding you for it.

Details of a new loyalty program called Play Points have been discovered. Specifically, 9to5Google has found code inside the APKs of versions 11.5 and 11.6 of the Play Store contain references to a new “Google Play Points” program. The code suggests that you’ll earn points form your purchases in the Play Store that you can use for “special in-app items or Google Play credit”.

It sounds like you’ll earn points from buying Android apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books. For example, the Japanese Play Store will get you 1 point for every ¥100 you spend, according to code in the APKs. The Play Points program will also reportedly have different levels with benefits for each one, but details on these aspects of the program are still light.

It’s unclear when Google might launch Play Points, but with multiple references buried inside the Play Store APKs, it definitely looks like Google is laying the groundwork of its new program. With all of the competing digital storefronts out there, Play Points could be a good way for Google to tempt Android users to buy their movies, TV shows, music, and books from the Play Store.
