Gorilla Glass 6 official, can help your phone survive 15 drops

Corning has introduced the latest version of Gorilla Glass that we’ll surely begin seeing on lots of smartphones soon.

Gorilla Glass 6 is now official, and Corning says that it’s “up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5.” The new Gorilla Glass 6 improves on Gorilla Glass 5 by surviving drops from higher heights and has also been engineered to survive multiple drops. Corning touts that dropped Gorilla Glass 6 onto rough surfaces 15 times from 1 meter up and that the glass survived.

The new version of Gorilla Glass is also engineered to meet the needs of popular phone designs. “Gorilla Glass 6 was also developed to meet the requirements of modern designs that use glass for more than 85 percent of the enclosure,” says Corning’s Scott Forester. Gorilla Glass 6 is also good for design trends like enhanced wireless charging and customization through printed glass.

Gorilla Glass 6 is expected to begin appearing on devices in the next several months.

We see Gorilla Glass on a lot of smartphones. In fact, Corning says that Gorilla Glass has been used on more than 6 billion devices from more than 45 major brands, so it’s good to hear that Corning continues to improve it and make the glass more durable. After all, lots of people rely on their smartphone to store personal info and to say connected to the world, so it’s important that it can withstand some drops and abuse.
