OnePlus 6 confirmed to feature display notch

In an interview with The Verge, OnePlus has confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus 6 will feature a notch at the top of the display. Though preceded by the Essential Phone, the iPhone X kicked off a major design trend with its display notch. In the months following, multiple Android manufacturers have introduced new devices utilizing a display notch, though Samsung has notably taken a stand against the trend with the Galaxy S9. OnePlus, however, appears to be embracing it.

In the photo above, we can see that the notch on the OnePlus 6 is larger than that of the Essential Phone and smaller than the notch on the iPhone X, remaining relatively unobtrusive. For OnePlus, the decision to include a notch was not focused on the aesthetic, but instead on maximizing the available display space. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei says, “What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen.”

Though the display notch remains controversial among Android users, there’s no doubt that it does free up extra display space and allows the phone’s overall footprint to be smaller. And in the case of OnePlus, the company is proactively testing apps to ensure notch compatibility, while also developing ways to disguise the notch when viewing videos.

The OnePlus 6 is expected to launch within the coming months, though no release date has been confirmed.

What are your thoughts on OnePlus’s implementation of the display notch? Is this a good change, or would you prefer a more traditional design?
