Google’s new Android distribution numbers show Nougat finally taking the top spot

Google today posted its latest Android platform distribution numbers, and the stats are notable for a couple of reasons.

During the 7-day period ending on February 5, Android Oreo (8.0 and 8.1) was on 1.1 percent of devices. That marks the first time that we’ve seen Oreo on more than 1 percent of Android devices.

Android Nougat (7.0 and 7.1) usage grew to 28.5 percent this month, while Android Marshmallow (6.0) slipped to 28.1 percent. This is also notable because it’s the first time that Nougat has surpassed Marshmallow, making Nougat the most-used version of Android.

Android Lollipop (5.0 and 5.1) dropped to 24.6 percent usage this month, while Android KitKat (4.4) usage slipped to 12.0 percent and Android Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3) dropped to 5.0 percent.

Rounding out this month’s usage stats is Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) at 0.4 percent and Android Gingerbread (0.3 percent), both of which are lower than they were last month.

It’s great to see a newer version of Android unseat Marshmallow as the most widely used flavor of Android. While Nougat isn’t the absolute latest version, it’s newer than Marshmallow and is only one version back from being the newest. Meanwhile, Android Oreo usage continues to steadily grow, and it should get a nice boost when 2017 flagships like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.
