Acer Android AIO TA272HUL: hands-on and first-impressions
Acer originally unveiled the TA272HUL Android All-in-One back in January. The announcement arrived during CES. More to the point for today -- Acer recently provided us with a unit for review. We have to admit that having Android (in this case 4.2 Jelly Bean with the Play Store) running on a 27-inch display seems a bit crazy. We'll likely have more to say as we get deeper into the review, but for now we wanted to share some images and some first impression style thoughts.
The front of the AIO is largely the display, which is IPS with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. The display also has 10-point touchscreen support. And as you'll see in a gallery later in the post, Acer ships the AIO with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Overall the construction feels solid. The display seems fairly responsive, and sits centered in the middle of a shiny bezel. There is also a 2MP webcam. The bottom, which is clear plastic houses a pair of Dolby surround sound speakers.
The back of the AIO has the stand, which allows the user to prop it anywhere between 30 to 80 degrees. The stand seems sturdy enough, and in the brief time we have spent playing -- it didn't give us any reason for worry. Other spec related highlights include a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, dual-band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. There is also a microSD memory card slot.
The image sitting above gives an idea of what Chrome looks like when running. You will notice the keyboard -- it seems oversized and well, sort of comical. Some items seem a bit strange, we are talking about Android on a 27-inch desktop device. But at the same time, there are some immediate perks we can see. For one this will make a nice side-table setup in a living room or kitchen.
Not only does it make a good music player, but loaded up with an app such as Dayframe and you have a really nice photo frame for when the system is not in active use. This could also make for a nice connected media device with apps such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. Of course, you could also load up Plex, as well as the many media options offered direct from Google.
Acer also has the TA272HUL loaded with a fair amount of ports for connectivity. The gallery sitting above gives an idea of the setup. Most of the ports are located along the back, however there are some USB on the side, as well as some basic controls such as volume, input and power on the opposite side. The ports also include HDMI and DisplayPort which means this can be used as an external monitor for other computers.
Last up is the keyboard and mouse. These are both on the basic side, but they also seem to be on the functional side. We will have to do a bit more playing with the keyboard and mouse for the full review. For now we have spent majority of the time using the system as a touchscreen device.
