Samsung unveils Exynos 9810 with facial recognition and more

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to arrive in the first part of this year, and now Samsung has detailed the processor that may be tucked inside some of those devices.

Today Samsung officially unveiled the Exynos 9810. Technical aspects to start: It is based on a 10nm FinFET process and Samsung says that the single-core performance has been improved two-fold over the previous generation Exynos processor while multi-core performance is up by 40% compared to the previous model. The Exynos 9 boasts an octa-core CPU with four custom cores that can reach 2.9GHz and another four cores that are optimized for efficiency.

As far as what new features the processor has to offer, they include better facial recognition support. The Exynos 9810 offers support for neural network deep learning, which means it can be used to better recognize people and even items in photos. If that wasn’t enough, it can also support a camera that can scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection. That means face identification security should be improved and face-tracking filters (think Apple’s Animoji).

One last detail: Samsung also included a Cat.18 LTE modem with the processor which supports up to 6x carrier aggregation. That means it can support download speeds up to 1.2Gbps and upload speeds up to 200Mbps.

Samsung says the Exynos 9810 is in mass production, so we could see it in some Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ models this year. It will be interesting to see if Samsung is going to differentiate features in these models and the versions of the Galaxy S9 that will probably feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.
