OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T can’t stream HD video from Netflix and others

One of the benefits of having a high definition smartphone display is the variety of different platforms out there that support streaming HD content. But sometimes that’s not the case, like in the case of the last two flagship smartphones from OnePlus.

It has been recently discovered that the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T are unable to stream HD content from a variety of different services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play Movies.

The two handsets simply don’t support the right digital rights management (DRM) parameters at this point in time. Specifically, both smartphones support Widevine Level 3 DRM, but that doesn’t offer HD streaming functionality. To get that, the devices need to support Widevine Level 1 DRM.

OnePlus says that this is an issue that will be fixed with a software update in the future, but it isn’t going into any detail on when that might actually arrive.

This is an incredibly strange situation. First, the fact that OnePlus opted out of supporting Widevine Level 1 DRM to begin with is a strange move, considering that should basically be the default option right out of the gate, especially for phones that offer displays that can support content at that resolution. And second, that the OnePlus 5 has been like this for a year and no one apparently noticed.
