RED announces the Hydrogen One with a ‘holographic display’ for $1,195

RED is a name that is very, very popular in the film industry, and now the company has apparently decided 2018 is the year it should jump into the smartphone industry.

Today RED officially announced the Hydrogen One smartphone, which is running Android and features a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD card slot for expandable storage. Unfortunately that’s all we know about the handset’s specs, as RED says the other details might change ahead of the device’s launch in early 2018.

What RED was more than willing to talk about, though, at least in part, was the phone’s “holographic display.” It will be a 5.7-inch panel and will somehow takes advantage of nanotechnology to “seamlessly [switch] between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games.” RED doesn’t go into detail here, probably because it doesn’t want to give away any of its secrets so far ahead of the phone’s arrival.

On top of that, the Hydrogen One will use an algorithm to convert stereo sound into “multi-dimensional audio” to enhance the listening experience. It will be a modular phone, too, similar to what we’ve seen from Motorola and its Moto Mods. However, RED says the modular accessories won’t be available at launch and they didn’t announce what accessories we should expect other than the fact they’ll lean heavily towards image capturing.

The basic model is made out of aluminum and will cost $1,195 and there’s also a titanium model that will start at $1,595. RED says the prices may change by the time the Hydrogen One’s Q1 2018 launch rolls around. RED also says that “after this initial release we will NOT be able to fill all orders on time due to display production limitations. We will NOT guarantee these prices at the time of release.”
