Moto Z2 Force Edition now official with 5.5-inch ShatterShield display

As expected, Motorola took the stage today to officially announce the newest member of its smartphone lineup: the Moto Z2 Force Edition.

The high-end flagship smartphone is coming to market with some key changes in place. As far as features go, all of the major boxes have been checked, including a Quad HD AMOLED display that measures in at 5.5 inches and features Motorola’s ShatterShield technology to prevent any breaking, even when the phone is dropped.

The other key details: There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor under the hood, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage with a microSD card slot for expandable storage. The Moto Z2 Force Edition is running Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, and Motorola promises an update to Android O in the (hopefully near) future. There’s also a 2730mAh battery, which is down from the 3500mAh battery in the original Moto Z Force.

Around back, the Moto Z2 Force Edition features a pair of 12-megapixel cameras. One sensor is color and the other is monochrome, the latter of which can be used to take real black-and-white photos instead of relying on a filter to simulate that particular type of picture. The f/2.0 sensors feature phase detection and laser autofocus, but Motorola doesn’t mention optical image stabilization. The cameras will also let owners take bokeh photos, too. There’s a 5-megapixel front-facing camera paired with a front-facing flash as well.

The Moto Z2 Force Edition will be available in Black and White/Gold, and there is also a Slate Gray color variant that’s available exclusively on T-Mobile. This leads us to the other bit of big news: Motorola’s newest flagship will be available on all the major wireless carriers in the United States.

Those interested in the handset can expect it to arrive on August 10 for AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and T-Mobile. It will also be available to buy from Motorola’s website and Best Buy. It’s priced at $710 in most instances, but it looks like the price will go up at some carriers. For example, AT&T is asking $810.

Moto’s Z2 Force Edition will support new and old Moto Mods. There’s a brand new Moto 360 Camera Mod that’s priced at $299. There is also a new Moto Gamepad Mod, which Motorola says does not suffer from any Bluetooth lag. And if you pre-order the Moto Z2 Force Edition now, you can get a free Insta-Share Projector Mod, but only for a limited time.

So, there we have it. The Moto Z2 Force Edition is now real, and launches at the beginning of August. Who’s picking one up?
