Flash will be gone from Chrome by 2020
We don’t know many people who really miss Adobe Flash. HTML is faster, more secure, and easier on resources. Flash was a mess, causing major lag playing a 2D Flash game on a $2,000 gaming rig. Not to mention that Flash is far less common these days. In 2014, over 80% of Chrome users visited a site with Flash, but that’s down to 17% and falling.
The latest news is that Adobe is ending support for the plugin in 2020, and Google has its own plans for Flash support in Chrome. The plugin will be fully removed by 2020, but there is a lot more to do in the meantime. By mid-2018, Chrome will ask permission before running Flash (this is a great behavior to have now). And by mid-2019, the plugin will be disabled but still remain in Chrome. Other browsers have similar plans.
With Flash slowly disappearing on the internet and long gone on mobile, this is the end of the line for the plugin. We can’t help but feel a little sad thinking about all the great mini-games we played in our childhood, but the memories of lag and horrible Flash ads drowns that out. Let us know what you think of this news in the comments!
