Google’s new Android distribution report includes Nougat growth and the debut of Oreo

Google today posted the Android platform distribution numbers for October 2017, and there’s a couple of exciting bits of info to tell you about.

These numbers detail which versions of Android were used to access the Google Play Store during the 7-day period ending on October 2. Android Oreo makes its debut on Google’s chart this month, starting out at 0.8 percent. That’s not much, but that’s also not surprising since the update just launched and is really only available on Nexus and Pixel devices right now.

Android Nougat usage grew from last month, finishing at 17.8 percent, while Android Marshmallow usage slipped a bit to 32 percent. Despite that slip, Marshmallow is still the most-used version of Android.

Android Lollipop fell to 27.7 percent usage, according to Google, while KitKat fell to 14.5 percent and Jelly Bean dropped to 6.6 percent. Rounding things out is Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, both of which held steady at 0.6 percent usage.

Overall there’s nothing too surprising in these latest numbers, but it’s good to see Nougat usage continue to grow and for Oreo to make its debut. Expect both Nougat and Oreo usage to continue to grow in the coming months at the expense of older versions of Android.
