Twitter may stop counting links and photos against the 140-character limit

Twitter has been around for quite some time, and the 140-character limit on tweets has been there right out of the gate. It was meant to make it easier to send tweets through a standard text message back when the service launched, but ever since apps took over, there’s been call for change.

Rumors had circulated some time ago that Twitter could remove the 140-character limit and bump it up to 10,000 characters, but that didn’t come to fruition. The newly-christened news app has removed the 140-character limit from Direct Messages, though, and now it sounds like changes are on the way for standard tweets.

Bloomberg reports that within the next two weeks, Twitter could roll out a change that would see photos and links no longer count against the 140-character limit. Nothing is official just yet, and the source of the story is anonymous, but if the news is true, that would save 23 characters for telling a story when sharing a link.
