Another Samsung device is getting KitKat, this time it’s the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active

Samsung has been doing pretty well with updates recently, updating its more obscure devices as well as flagship models like the Galaxy S4 and Note 3. Today Samsung and AT&T are rolling out the KitKat update for the Galaxy S4 Active, a variant of the Galaxy S4 that was made waterproof and dustproof at the expense of a few megapixels of its camera.

The Galaxy S4 Active’s update is very similar to the one that came to the standard Galaxy S4, offering all the benefits of KitKat plus a few bug fixes. There is the newly redesigned status bar with white icons and transparency as well as a new lockscreen music player and camera shortcut. You’ll also get to choose your preferred SMS app now. Here’s a full changelog:

  • Android 4.4 OS upgrade (http://ift.tt/1agkB4p)
  • New Lock Screen Access
  • Media Controls – full-screen album art and media controls when listening to music
  • Camera Shortcut – access the Camera application right from the lock screen
  • SMS App Chooser – select a default application for sending and receiving SMS text messages
  • Restyled Status and Navigation Bars – status and navigation bars are translucent and can sit on top of apps, along with simplified status bar icons
  • Consolidated Location Settings – location services are integrated and more detailed by new Location menu
  • Expanded Emoji Icons
  • Wireless Printing – supports printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Copy and paste improvements
  • Easier to insert pictures and videos in email or messages
  • Camera app accessibility from the lock screen
  • Call reliability improvements

The OTA is rolling out to everyone right now, so if you haven’t received a prompt, check for updates manually in Settings. You can also wait a bit and it’ll come to you. Just be sure to use WiFi to download it or that 450MB OTA will put a serious dent in your data cap.

Have you received this update?
