Amazon smartphone purportedly caught on camera, said to sport six cameras

Rumors of an Amazon-made smartphone have been swirling for quite some time, but today may be the first time that we’re getting an actual look at the device itself.

BGR has shared several images of what it says is a prototype version of the Amazon smartphone. The unit is enclosed in a shell that’s meant to hide its true visage. According to BGR’s sources, this unit features a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a secondary front-facing shooter.

That spec sheet may not be the most exciting one that we’ve ever seen, but the device’s software is said to be more interesting. The Amazon smartphone reportedly packs four additional front-facing cameras that track the position of the users face in order to adjust the position of on-screen content and alter the perspective of its visuals, giving a 3D user experience without requiring the use of 3D glasses.

This 3D user experience will allegedly be used in several parts of the phone’s operating system. That includes app icons and core apps like the mapping app. Amazon’s digital stores may even let the user see 3D product images. Amazon is also said to be courting developers to have third-party apps that support this 3D experience ready at launch.

A recent report suggested that Amazon may be planning to announce its smartphone in June and ship it in September. It’s not clear how close the final product will be to this prototype, but Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets haven’t included much design beyond being black slabs, and so I wouldn’t be surprised if this smartphone ends up following that trend.
