Sony Xperia Z2 to ship on time despite possible stock shortage

Juan Carlos Torres

Calling the Xperia Z2 a victim of its own success, various Sony online stores have removed the pre-order option from the company's latest flagship. However, the company assures its fans that there will be no delay to the April launch, though some now speculate only a few units will be available initially.

A few days ago, some noticed that various Sony Mobile regional websites no longer offered the Xperia Z2 for pre-orders. This immediately caused a rumor frenzy, with many hinting that it is an indicator of a coming delay to the retail launch of the device. While Sony does confirm that it is not simply a case of clerical error, its explanations are no less reassuring.

In the UK, Sony explains that the Estore is currently no longer accepting pre-orders because of stock numbers. Sony's French PR echoed the fact, but also implied that the Xperia Z2 has become so popular, leading to an unexpected shortage. Nonetheless, Sony insists that, at least in the UK, customers will see the Xperia Z2 in the market starting April. Other regions might not be so lucky.

Sony's response still leaves many questions unanswered. Even presuming that Sony is being truthful that this supposed shortage is due to strong demand for the product, the situation still calls into question the company's capability to supply this alleged strong demand. And the fact that stocks ran out immediately with just pre-orders alone could mean that there wasn't much to begin with. Quite strange for a company that should be expecting its flagship device to be a huge hit. Whichever way you spin it, PR-wise, this does not bode well for the Sony Xperia Z2.
