OnePlus CEO says 5G smartphones are going to be more expensive

The leading smartphones aren’t cheap, as we’ve officially welcomed in the $1,000 smartphone. But it sounds like we should expect to see some price hikes incoming.

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, has confirmed to The Verge that its upcoming 5G smartphone will be priced between $200 and $300 more expensive than the OnePlus 6T. There’s no definitive word here in which OP6T models Lau is comparing, so it could be the most expensive model or it could be the least expensive model. If it’s the latter we’re talking about and the price hike is $200, then the future 5G OnePlus smartphone will be priced around $749.

It will be interesting to see where OnePlus finds itself in 2019. The company has been one of the leading names when it comes to offering top-tier smartphone quality without aiming to break the bank. A price at or around, $749 will put it right in line with a variety of other companies. Then again, if those other companies are also forecasting a bump in price around the same amount, that would mean OnePlus would still come below them in terms of price but not necessarily quality.

Still, we’re a ways away before we see how this will all shake out for smartphone design and pricing. OnePlus has plans for a 5G smartphone in the U.S. and in Europe, which will be just the start for the 5 revolution.
