Google is now offering a new USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter

Google’s official USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter has had a bit of a rollercoaster existence ever since it was unveiled after the company announced the headphone jack-less Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

The accessory started out priced at $20, which was definitely quite a bit of money to fork over for a small adapter. But it didn’t take long for Google to make that realization on its own and drop the price for the adapter to just $9, putting it right in line with Apple’s own Lightning to headphone adapter.

Now Google has implemented a new change. The company has quietly introduced a slightly different version of its USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter, making it ever-so-slightly shorter but raising the price at the same time.

The current USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter measures in at 3.67 inches in length, while the previous version had a length of 3.8 inches. That’s obviously not a big change, and one that most people probably won’t notice, but it’s definitely there.

Meanwhile, the one change that most potential customers might notice is the price difference. As mentioned above, up until very recently the adapter was priced at $9. The new one costs $12. But that price tag does equal an important change: Google says the new adapter offers reduced plug-in latency with Pixel smartphones, which translates to a 53 percent improvement in plug-in latency. Meanwhile, the new adapter also offers 38 percent more music playback time when compared to the previous model.

Other than those noteworthy changes, the new USB-C to headphone adapter is the same as the old version. It will still let you plug your standard wired headphones into your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL (and probably the Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL when they are announced on October 9) for your listening pleasure.
