The new Google Fit has you earning Move Minutes and Heart Points
Google Fit is not a new feature in itself, but the company behind the health and fitness platform has decided to give it a pretty big update that also brings new features.
Google has announced that it is working with the World Health Organization (WHO) and American Heart Association (AHA) to bring a new new Google Fit experience to the fore. With the new Fit, Google is focusing on two primary areas: Move Minutes and Heart Points. These will see Fit users closing rings as they earn those points.
With Move Minutes, Google Fit aims to help users make some small changes to their daily routine. The idea is to have folks move more often, which means little things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or just walking more often.
The other element is Heart Points, which is where the closing of the rings comes into play. The new Google Fit will hand out one point for every minute of “moderate activity”. Google says if you “pick up the pace” while you’re walking the dog, you’ll earn points. And you can earn double points if you take part in more rigorous activities, including kickboxing or going for a run.
The new Google Fit will be able to track your daily routines and exercises either directly from the smartphone or your Wear OS-equipped smartwatch. The platform will also integrate with other health and fitness apps, including MyFitnessPal, Endomondo, Runkeeper, and Strava. And the longer you use Google Fit, you will get tips to adjust your goals. There is a new Journal feature within Google Fit, too, which will track your fitness history, achievements, and future goals.
If you already have an Android phone or a Wear OS smartwatch, then the new Google Fit will be rolling out your way this week.
What do you think of the new Fit?
