Samsung intros Exynos Modem 5100 for 5G connectivity

As the march to 5G rolls on, Samsung has announced the Exynos Modem 5100, the first 5G modem that’s fully compatible with the latest 3GPP industry standard. The chip is built on a 10nm process for power efficiency. While it will support new 5G technology, it also features legacy support for older networks such as LTE and 3G. This will save manufacturers from needing two modems in 5G-compatible smartphones.

The Exynos Modem 5100 features support for maximum download speeds of 2Gbps on sub-6GHz bands and 6Gbps on mmWave bands. These speeds are theoretical maximums, so actual speeds will be significantly slower. Nonetheless, 5G represents a massive speed increase over existing LTE technology. With 5G, more possibilities open up for IoT technology, autonomous driving, and artificial intelligence.

The Exynos Modem 5100 will be available in late 2018, and we should start seeing the first 5G-compatible devices in early to mid 2019. For more info, check out the source link below.
