Samsung’s Galaxy Watch may be running Tizen OS after all

Will Samsung launch a smartwatch this year that’s running Wear OS and not its own proprietary Tizen OS? That’s becoming a very hard question to answer.

For those who haven’t been keeping track of this situation, here’s a quick refresher: Back in May there was a report that said Samsung was working on a smartwatch, which in and of itself isn’t too surprising. However, that same report indicated the company was planning on including Google’s Wear OS (what was once known as Android Wear) on that wearable, and not the company’s own Tizen OS.

Fast forward to June and a subsequent report suggested Samsung was indeed working on a smartwatch, but that Samsung was going to use Tizen after all. And then earlier this month, rumors cropped up that Samsung’s smartwatch would be called Galaxy Watch and that it would feature Wear OS on it.

Now here we are, nearing the end of July, and now SamMobile is out with a new report saying that Samsung will indeed be naming their new smartwatch the Galaxy Watch — in line with the Galaxy branding for other devices, like their smartphones — but the device won’t run Wear OS. Instead, the upcoming smartwatch will be running Tizen OS 4.0.

Tizen 4.0 and the Galaxy Watch will probably mean we see Samsung’s digital personal assistant, Bixby, make the leap over to a smartwatch, which is probably why we will see the Galaxy Watch get unveiled on August 9 alongside the Galaxy Note 9.

So right now it sounds like the Galaxy Watch will have Tizen OS on board. Is that a dealbreaker for you?
