OEMs and carriers are committed to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem

For wireless carriers, the next big thing is 5G technology. But to make any use of that, smartphones and other mobile devices need to actually support it. As such, Qualcomm is hard at work on offering up a modem that will support 5G wireless technologies, and smartphone manufacturers and wireless carriers are jumping on board.

Qualcomm has officially announced both the wireless carriers and OEMs that will support the Snapdragon X50 5G modem.

As far as carriers are concerned, here’s the official list, which covers not just carriers in the United States but also wireless networks in international markets:

AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, KT Corporation, LG Uplus, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Singtel, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telstra, TIM, Verizon, and Vodafone Group.

With wireless carriers on board with Qualcomm’s upcoming 5G modem, the smartphone manufacturers need to jump on board, too. Qualcomm has also name dropped those OEMs who have already pledged their commitment to the X50 5G modem, including names like Sony, LG, and OPPO:

Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global – the home of Nokia phones, HTC, Inseego/Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, OPPO, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi, and ZTE.

While we are still a ways away before 5G fills up the airwaves, it is starting to feel like it’s right around the corner. Sprint just announced that it wants to launch its 5G network in the first half of 2019, so we don’t have that much longer to wait before the 5G network wars start.
