Google Home and Chromecast devices affecting Wi-Fi performance for some, fix incoming

If you have started to notice that your in-home Wi-Fi performance has started to decline, especially after you have added certain streaming devices to your network, an incoming fix from Google might alleviate the issue.

Google has confirmed that a bug has caused Wi-Fi performance to drop for some customers. The root issue appears to be the Cast software baked into Android devices which can “incorrectly send a large amount of network traffic which can slow down or temporarily impact Wi-Fi networks.” Google does note that the specific impact on a Wi-Fi network will vary depending on the devices in the home, so not everyone will experience the same issues, even if the bug is causing it.

Google has identified that Android devices are indeed troubled with the bug, but so are devices with Chromecast capabilities built in. That includes a Chromecast device proper as well as the Google Home lineup.

There is good news, though. The teams working on a fix have come up with one and Google will roll out a software update on Thursday, January 18. It will arrive via Google Play Services, so keep an eye out for that.
