Alpine introduces ridiculously expensive 9-inch floating single DIN Android Auto head unit

Usually double DIN car head units have 7-inch displays or smaller. It’s just the nature of the double DIN size. Alpine announced a new head unit at CES 2018 that not only features a larger screen, but is also a single DIN unit.

The iLX-F309 has a huge 9-inch 800×480 capacitive touch screen that sticks out of the single DIN player. It’s a fixed display rather than a folding one like some single DIN units, but it can be adjusted a bit during installation. You can move it in and out, up and down, and tilt it up and down (though side to side tilt doesn’t seem to be possible).

The head unit features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with the former having Google Assistant, but there is no word of wireless connection for Android Auto functionality. It also has a ton of room for expansion with support for a CD drive, dual HDMI inputs, support for multiple cameras, and more.

Unfortunately, the unit will cost $1,100 at launch. It has some awesome features but the crazy price is hard to justify for what is essentially a pretty normal head unit, especially with a WVGA display. Let us know what you think in the comments!
