Vivo will have the first smartphone with in-display fingerprint reader

For the companies that aren’t ready to drop the fingerprint reader from their smartphone and don’t want to put it on the back of the handset, an in-display fingerprint reader might be an option.

Luckily for those companies, Synaptics has already announced that 2018 is going to be a banner year for in-display fingerprint readers, confirming that the feature has entered mass production for a “top five OEM.” Now we know Vivo will be the first top five OEM that’ll have a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The first smartphone hasn’t been named just yet, but the fingerprint sensor is Clear ID FS9500 for what it’s worth. Forbes has a write-up of what it’s like to use an in-display fingerprint reader on a pre-production Vivo-branded smartphone, saying that it’s simple to use and fast in its response time.

There will be an image of a fingerprint that appears on the screen when the phone is woken up, and it will disappear after the fingerprint has been recognized. What’s more, the in-display fingerprint sensor will only get activated when it’s needed in an effort to preserve battery life.

Some companies are already moving away from fingerprint readers, but it doesn’t look like it’s a biometric security measure that is on the way out just yet. Are you looking forward to using in-display fingerprint sensors?
