Latest Google Pixel 2 leak hints at IP68 water resistance, always-on Ambient Display, and more

The Pixel 2 leaks continue to trickle out as we wait for an official announcement from Google.

Images that claim to show the front and back of the Google Pixel 2 have been shared by 9to5Google. While they’re heavily blurred, the photos do show the front of the device along with its large bezels and front-facing speakers. Around back we can see a camera that’s said to be part of a slate gray glass window, and below that is a dark silver back. It’s unclear if this color will launch, but it’s at least in testing inside of Google.

The body of this Pixel 2 is said to offer IP68 water and dust resistance, and while there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack to be found, it’s expected that Google will offer a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter in the package.

Other hardware details of this Pixel 2 are said to include 64GB and 128GB storage options, a 4.97-inch 1920×1080 display, and EIS support for the camera.

On the software side, Google will reportedly offer an always-on option for the Pixel 2’s Ambient Display feature. It’s also said that the Pixel 2 will ship with Android 8.1.

Finally, today’s report says that accessory makers have Pixel 2 embargoes for October 5. That’s the same date we’ve heard before as a possible Pixel 2 announce date.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 are expected to share the same spec list, save for their displays. The screens on the two phones could be pretty different, though, with the Pixel XL 2 rumored to have a larger screen that also fits in with the recent trend of super thin smartphone bezels that we’ve seen on other flagships. That doesn’t mean that the smaller Pixel 2 will be a bad option, though. In addition to packing flagship specs into a smaller form factor than the XL 2, the standard Pixel 2 will reportedly boast front-facing speakers to enhance your media consumption.

Based on what we’ve heard about the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, are you looking forward to Google’s new hero phones? If so, which sounds more appealing?
