Nexus 6P and 5X confirmed to not support aptX
Streaming music over Bluetooth always means a loss of quality compared to a good cable, but codecs like Qualcomm’s aptX try to change that. AptX is a codec that allows for higher quality audio over Bluetooth.
Unfortunately, Google has confirmed that the Nexus 6P and 5X do not support aptX. A bug was filed on the Google Issue Tracker by a user claiming that aptX was not supported on his 6P, and Google confirmed that this is intended behavior, saying “Unfortunately support for aptX and aptX HD are not supported on Nexus 6p and Nexus 5X – only on newer devices.”
This isn’t much of a surprise since neither the Pixel nor even the iPhone support aptX. It’s a software codec which means that, though the hardware to run it is there, licensing fees are what is holding Google back.
All hope is not lost, as Google could always add it, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Are you missing the inclusion of aptX, or is it not important to you? Leave a comment!
