Xiaomi moves into Mexico as gateway to Latin America

Xiaomi has announced that it will begin selling its devices in Mexico by the end of May. The company’s offerings will include the Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4X. The Redmi Note 4, the more premium model, will be sold at a starting price of 5,499 Mexican Pesos ($296 USD). The Redmi 4X will be available for slightly less, starting at 3,999 Mexican Pesos ($209 USD).

Xiaomi is launching the Redmi Note 4 first, offering it by the end of the month in Best Buy, Coppel, and Sam’s Club. The Redmi Note 4 will also be offered online through Amazon, Best Buy, Elektra, Soriana and Walmart. The Redmi 4X will be available at a later date that will be announced through Xiaomi’s social media channels.

Xiaomi is the world’s fifth-largest smartphone manufacturer and experienced rapid growth in Asia. The company’s strategy involves offering devices with high-end specs at low prices directly to consumers through flash sales, which proved highly successful in China and other Asian countries. Xiaomi, however, has experienced some hurdles in expanding outside of Asia. Additionally, Xiaomi took a blow when former Googler, Hugo Barra, left the company to join Facebook early this year.

Xiaomi aims to expand throughout Latin America, using Mexico as a gateway to the region. The company has previously dabbled in Latin America, offering devices through third-parties in Mexico, while selling directly in Brazil. Latin America is a diverse and growing market that holds significant potential, particularly for a low-cost manufacturer like Xiaomi. If the Chinese company can translate its success to Latin America, it stands a solid chance against major rivals.
