Sonic Runners will be launching globally this week on Android

Published on Monday, 22 June 2015 12:34

SEGA has announced that Sonic Runners will be dashing onto Android devices this week. Up until now, Sonic Runners has been available in select regions during a sort of soft launch period, and by select regions we mean Japan. That will, however, be changing in the next couple of days.

If you've been following the site the past few months, then you've seen us post about this game in the recent past. If you're new though, or just haven't heard of this game, Sonic Runners is a new 2D side-scrolling action running game featuring the blue hedgehog and was developed by the Sonic Team. Of course it won't be just Sonic showing up in this game but plenty of his friends (and enemies) from the franchise as well including Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Runners Features:

- Designed by SONIC TEAM, the original Sonic development team
- Super fast and challenging levels with loop-de-loops, retro design, hidden rings, and classic enemies
- Unleash Color Powers: LASER POWER for hi-speed movement, ASTEROID POWER for destroying obstacles, and DRILL POWER for burrowing underground
- Unlock Tails and Knuckles as player characters
- Master their Speed, Aerial, and Power attributes
- Evolve your character’s powers with collected rings
- Run with the power of Companions
- Complete stages and enhance your character’s abilities
- Select the best Companion for the job depending on your character and the stage
- Reign in fur ranking categories: Runners’ League, Friend, World, and Historical
- Compete against your friends and the world for the “Sonic Record”
- Face off against up to 50 players in the Runners’ League
- Climb to the top of the “S League” to claim the highest honor!

Sonic Runners sticks to the franchise's fast-paced type of gameplay, while collecting rings and gems players will need to navigate loops, springs, and other hazards like normal. Of course there are also enemies you will need to avoid running into. In fact, if you compare this to other running games out there, Sonic Runners has a lot more depth to it than most of the other games in this genre with features like character evolution and having to pick the best companion for the job. It is also a level-based game, not an endless runner.

For those of you waiting to play this game but don't live in Japan, you'll soon be able to download Sonic Runners this week, as the game will be launching globally on Google Play on June 23rd, 2015. It will be available for download for free with optional IAPs available as well. We'll post an update once the global launch happens, which will be using the same Google Play listing as the current Japan release, linked below.
