Sony’s unveils 6.1mm-thick Xperia Z4 Tablet, waterproof Xperia M4 Aqua

Mobile World Congress is one of the biggest mobile events of the year, and Sony has responded accordingly, bringing two new octa-core Android devices to the show.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet is Sony’s latest slate, offering Android 5.0 on a 10.1-inch 2560×1440 display. Powering the Z4 Tablet is a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor and a 6000mAh battery, and the device also has 32GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 5.1-megapixel wide-angle front-facing shooter. All of those goodies are packed into a body that’s 6.1mm thick and is IP68 rated for resistance to water (up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes) and dust.

Sony has also included some software goodies with its new tablet. Those include High-Res Audio that can reproduce high-frequency sound to offer a “studio-quality experience” and DSEE HX processing that’ll upscale audio to near-High-Res Audio levels. Sony’s also throwing in PS4 Remote Play, which can connect to your PlayStation 4 over Wi-Fi and let you play your PS4 games with the console’s controller.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet will begin rolling out in June 2015 in both Wi-Fi and 4G LTE flavors.

The second new device unveiled by Sony today is the Xperia M4 Aqua. As its name implies, the Xperia M4 Aqua is waterproof, being able to withstand up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes, even with a capless microUSB port. The Xperia M4 Aqua can stand up to dust as well.

Powering the Xperia M4 Aqua is a combination of Android 5.0 and a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor. Sony’s also thrown in an 8-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture and ISO 3200 sensitivity, a wide-angle 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a dedicated hardware camera button. Rounding out the phone’s spec list is a 5-inch 1280×720 display, 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, and a 2400mAh battery that can last for up to two days on a single charge. If you use Ultra Stamina Mode, which turns off all but the core functions of the phone, Sony says you can stretch that battery life up to a week.

The Xperia M4 Aqua will be available in 80 countries on more than 100 carriers starting in spring 2015. Pricing will be set at €299 ($335 USD). Considering its price, feature set, and design, the Xperia M4 Aqua looks like it could be a great option for consumers that want an Xperia Z3-like experience in a package that’s a bit easier on the wallet.
