Android distribution for March 2015 shows gains for Lollipop and KitKat

Today Google reported its Android platform distribution stats for March 2015, and — good news! — Lollipop grew.

In order to get these Android distribution numbers, Google gathered data from Android devices that accessed the Play Store during the 7-day period ending on March 2. Android 5.0 Lollipop grew from 1.6 percent in February to 3.3 percent in March. That’s not exactly a huge slice of the Android pie, but hey, it’s progress!

Android 4.4 KitKat grew as well, moving from 39.7 percent in February to 40.9 percent in March. Meanwhile, Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean dropped from 44.5 percent to 42.6 percent and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich fell from 6.4 percent market share to 5.9 percent.

No Android 3.0 devices were included in today’s report, but there are a couple of Android 2.x versions that are still here. Android 2.3 Gingerbread finished with a 6.9 percent share, while Android 2.2 Froyo held strong to the 0.4 percent share that it had last month.

While Android 5.0 still makes up a pretty small portion of all of the Android devices out there, that’ll change in the coming months. There are a lot of Lollipop-powered products that’ve been announced lately, including the HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6, which will both launch in the next couple of months. We’ll continue to see existing devices update to Lollipop as well.
