The next phase of Project Ara will be shown on Jan 14, 2015

The promise of modular phones and the flexibility Google’s Project Ara proposes to bring to consumers has the tech community giddy with excitement. And we’ve just barely witnessed the very beginning. Announced via Google+ today, the next phase of Project Ara will be detailed just two weeks into the new year at a developer conference being held for the project.

On January 14, 2015, Google will hold a developer conference for Project Ara in Mountain View with satellite locations at Google offices in New York City, Buenos Aires and London. A second identical conference will be held later on January 21 in Singapore with satellite locations at Google offices in Bangalore, Tokyo, Taipei and Shanghai.

Google is saying the conference will feature “the latest on the Ara platform,” more specifically “the next major release of the Ara Module Developers Kit (MDK) — version 0.20.” Phonebloks, who is working closely with Google on Project Ara, posted a video today detailing the engineering process that has gone into MDK version 0.20, showing off an early glimpse at a fully function Project Ara prototype. The Spiral 2 Prototype, as it’s being called, will be detailed at the upcoming conference.

January 14 may seem like it’s a ways away, but it’s only a couple months from now. One week before the Project Ara Developers Conference is CES, so expect January to be a huge month for Android.
