[APK] Google Drive 1.3 Removes Editing Capabilities–You May Want to Pass for Now

Two days ago, Google released the new standalone Docs and Sheets apps. While Docs and Sheets offered a dramatically improved editing experience compared to what was previously available through the official Google Drive app, many quickly felt these new additions were redundant. After all, users could previously edit documents and spreadsheets directly through the Google Drive app, as well as the recently acquired QuickOffice suite. Let’s also not forget that Google Drive, which itself was originally called Google Docs, still carried its vestigial Android package name: com.google.android.apps.docs-version.

Now, Google has gone ahead and done away with some of the redundancy. No, Google didn’t kill off the new Docs and Sheets apps in favor of integrating their improved editing capabilities into Drive. Rather, Google did away with Drive’s native editing capabilities entirely as of today’s update to version 1.3.144.17.

Now before we pull out our pitchforks, it’s important to keep in mind that today’s update still allows you to edit from within the Drive app—you just have to have Docs and Sheets installed first. Assuming you do have those two apps, you’re able to seamlessly edit documents and spreadsheets stored on your Google Drive with all of the same perks offered by the new apps. In addition to the removed editing capabilities and Docs and Sheets app integration, Drive 1.3 also brings a slightly tweaked user interface, as well as a new prompt asking users to install Docs and Sheets in order to edit directly.

Make your way over to the Google Drive listing on Google Play to get started. But since this is a staged rollout, not everyone will get the update just yet.  However, we’ve gone ahead and mirrored the update on our Dev-Host account for those who wish to get in on the action a bit early.
