Acer Iconia Tab 7 phablet and Iconia One 7 tablet revealed

Juan Carlos Torres

Acer has unveiled a double 7-inch whammy today. The Acer Iconia One 7 might yet be another entry level tablet for the budget market, but the Iconia Tab 7 adds a bit of telephony into the pot, making it a large, and awkward, phablet.

The two mobile devices do share something, or probably only one thing, in common. Both sport a similar 7-inch IPS LCD display with resolutions of 1280x800 pixels. The similarities end there. Though less featured, the Iconia One 7, is heavier at 330 g and thicker at 8.95 mm. The Iconia Tab 7, on the other hand, only weighs 298 g and its depth only comes at 8.9 mm. But beyond the outward appearance, the two are also worlds apart when it comes to hardware specs.

The phone-enabled Iconia Tab 7, this model being the A1-713HD, is powered by a MediaTek MT8382, giving the tablet clockspeeds of 1.3 GHz for each core. It has a 5 megapixel camera at the back, just enough for basic photography, and a 0.3 megapixel on the front for even more basic video chat or the rare selfie. The highlight of this device is, of course, the ability to make calls, though given the size, users will most likely be fumbling for a headset or use the speakerphone, unless they don't mind putting a large slab to their ear.

The Iconia One 7, on the other hand, runs on an Intel CPU, specifically a 1.6 GHz dual-core Atom Z2560. In contrast, the last Iconia One 7 unveiled last month used a 1.5 GHz dual-core VIA WM8800. It has 1 GB of RAM and storage options of either 8 GB or 16 GB. The camera on this tablet, however, is less than decent, with 2 megapixels at the back but the same 0.3 megapixel front shooter.

Acer hasn't yet disclosed full availability details for either device yet. The Iconia One 7 will come with 10 very colorful options. The Iconia Tab 7, however, was only revealed with a silver case and no word if there will be other colors available in the future.
