Kik is trying to reinvent messaging, the browser, or maybe both

Kik may not be an app we discuss frequently, but it’s one that’s used quite a bit. A new change brings a depth to messaging, and we’re not sure what to make of it. We’re also not sure you’ll know what to make of it, but it’s definitely cool.

Kik has updated their app on both iOS and Android to house a browser from within the app. Users can now go straight from browsing to messaging, all without ever leaving Kik. The goal is to make sharing links and things easier and faster, as you don’t necessarily have to leave the app to find something on the web. On the back of that, Kik has another interesting little twist.

They’re releasing a set of APIs to let Developers optimize their websites for Kik. The APIs will enable things like push notifications and easy sharing of photos. There is also a search spec to the API set which allows a website to be more discoverable to Kik users. So if a Kik user searched for ‘Hamburgers’, and a site that used Kik’s APIs sold Hamburgers, it would populate toward or at the top of the list.

The other goal is to allow users to utilize web pages form within the app’s browser, functioning more like a web app than something different altogether. By streamlining the process, Kik is aiming to make it easier on users and Developers. Also, they want you to just plain use the app more — or at all.
