Android Police coverage: DotEmu Releases R-Type 2 Port For Android, $1.99 For All The Late 80's Explosion Sprites You Can Handle

The original R-Type was released on Android some time ago, and it looks like DotEmu is slowly working its way through the catalog. More enemies, better graphics, and more nail-biting difficulty await you in R-Type II, which debuted in the arcades more than 24 years ago. As with most DotEmu games, the controls are tight, the price is reasonable, and there are no in-app purchases.

R-Type II is a horizontal scrolling shooter arcade game developed and published by Irem in 1989. This classic old-school game is the sequel to R-Type and the story takes place two years after. The player controls a ship called the R-9C which is an improved version of its predecessor, the R-9.

300: Seize Your Glory

Grammatically awkward titles aside, this tie-in for the upcoming 300 sequel looks pretty good, which is more than you can say for a lot of licensed mobile games. As you might expect from the source material, the gameplay is all about hacking and slashing your way through innumerable warriors. Full 3D visuals are nice, but you can expect a lot more blood than nuance. 300: Seize Your Glory also packs in 100% of your daily recommended allotment of loincloths.

Shardlands

Despite a completely different perspective and atmosphere, Shardlands reminds me of Portal: it's an insanely polished puzzler that uses mechanics more often seen in action-oriented genres. You make your way across a day-glo environment by moving platforms and avoiding bad guys, using a mix of puzzle-solving skills and timing to get to the end of each level. The game looks amazing, and the 80s synth music really sets the mood. It's a free download with a single $3 IAP to unlock the full game.

Breathtaking journey into an alien world full of mysteries, challenging puzzles and big scary monsters. Shardlands is an atmospheric 3D action puzzle adventure game with breathtaking visuals, beautiful soundtrack and fluid gameplay. Dawn is lost in a desolate alien world trying to find her way back home. She must activate an ancient machine with keys that are scattered around a broken world full of puzzles, monsters and dangerous contraptions.

Buddy & Me

Buddy & Me is a basic endless runner with gorgeous 2D art and a clear inspiration from The Neverending Story. That should be just about all you need to give it a look, but it's also got some fantastic animation and sound. The action is split between running levels on foot and flying on Buddy the Luck Dragon. The game is pretty simple and doesn't look all that challenging, but bags and bags of personality will keep you coming back. Buddy & Me is just a buck with no in-app purchases.

Solar Flux HD

Solar Flux is a pretty basic "zen" space shooter with some interesting mechanics. In addition to propulsion from Asteroids-style thrusters and environmental gravity a la Angry Birds Space, it lets you affect your own movement by shooting into tiny suns and riding the solar flairs. The gameplay itself is laid back, but the visuals are some of the best we've seen from a 2D game lately - check out those lighting effects. The HD version of Solar Flux is two bucks, but you can try the "Pocket" edition for free.

Travel across the universe to save dying suns from extinction in this unique and challenging space puzzle strategy game for tablet devices, where both problem solving and precise dexterity skills are needed to bring order to the cosmos. Supernovas, Asteroid Fields, Meteors and Black Holes are just some of the challenges you encounter as you sail your ship through the solar flares of imploding stars.

Brandnew Boy

What's this? An anime-style action-RPG with full 3D visuals and movement? Indeed, Brandnew Boy (which I suppose is a better title than "Cliché Amnesiac Anime Savior") seems like a surprisingly polished little brawler built on the Unreal engine, with enough energetic style to tide over the most ardent console gamer. Cell shaded visuals and a quick battle system, not to mention a fully-fleshed out story, make the game worth the $4 admission price... if you can stomach pushes for in-app purchases after that.

Rookie doesn’t know who he is, or how he got here, but one thing has been made terribly clear: he’ll have to fight to stay alive if he wants to find out. Brandnew Boy is heart-stopping, breath-taking 3D combat adventure built on Unreal Engine 3 for an unbelievable iOS action experience. Stranded this strange and sometimes beautiful place, “Rookie” finds he has limited time to contemplate his circumstances. The natives are bloodthirsty, and Rookie seems to be the only thing they think will quench that thirst.

HonorBound (RPG)

Action-RPG fans, your cup runneth over today. Honorbound takes a more mobile-focused approach than Brandnew Boy, with more conventional 2D fighting, standard upgrades, and monster battling (but with a mostly western feel). The 2D art is sharp and colorful, which is good, since it's all you're getting - there isn't much in the way of a story beyond clearing out lots of dungeons. Honorbound is free with in-app purchases.

Zombocalypse Now

Zombocalypse Now is the latest adventure book game from Tin Man, and it takes the road less traveled. Most of the previous entries have been fairly standard action or fantasy role playing adventures, but this one is more like a literary take on Ghostbusters. For reasons that aren't quite obvious, you play a sentient stuffed rabbit. Also, there are zombies. I don't know what they want to eat - stuffing, perhaps? - but it's a given that it won't end well for you. The game includes full-color illustrations and Tin Man's usual Choose Your Own Adventure play style.

They don't want your body, THEY WANT YOUR BRAINS. You're a stuffed bunny and it's the end of the world. When you slowly catch onto the fact that your latest date is in fact, the newest member of the living dead, there's only one thing to do - run. ...or, should you hang around a bit longer? After all, this is probably the best a date has gone for you in a while. This choice (along with many others) are entirely up to you...

Card City Nights

Ready for a card battle game that isn't trying to bankrupt you? Then Card City Nights should definitely be on your radar. The battle system is similar to Yu-Gi-Oh and the like, but the real draw is a whimsical story mode following a city that revolves around children's card games (but never on motorcycles). Best of all, and practically unique among Play Store card games, there are no in-app purchases.

Card City Nights is an adventure through a city filled with card-nuts and lunatics. Battle for the 8 legendary cards to enter the biggest competition this city has seen yet. CCN is not a traditional card-trading game. It's an adventure game with lots of funny characters and locations to find. There are no IAP's in this game. You collect booster packs by simply playing the adventure from start to finish.

100 Doors 2

I never understood why the original 100 Doors was so popular - it's a very basic puzzle game that relies on some staggering breaks in logic to solve its puzzles. But clearly a lot of players loved it, and they'll be happy to know that it's back with another one hundred puzzles for you to ponder. The graphics have been upgraded significantly, but it's still a relatively basic set of 2D sprites. 100 Doors 2 is free with no in-app purchases.

After Words With Friends, I thought I'd seen every possible variation of the Scrabble tile game. The guys behind You Don't Know Jack are here to prove me wrong with Word Puttz, and extremely odd combination of Scrabble and miniature golf. You lay down your words on the golf course, making your way across the grid to drop that last tile in the hole. 70 levels will give you various traps, but the game isn't half as addictive as the cheese-a-riffic trailer.

From the makers of YOU DON’T KNOW JACK comes a word-tile game with balls. Download Word Puttz – the only octopus-hosted, word-tile/mini-golf mashup that you’ll ever need. Build crosswords until you reach the cup. It sounds easy but there’s a catch. TA Little Red Riding Hood

We missed TA: Little Red Riding hood when it debuted on the Play Store, but now there's a free version for your gaming pleasure. The title plays a lot like They Need To Be Fed, with plenty Burton-inspired watercolor visuals fleshing out the 2D levels. You'll need solid twitch gaming skills and a little physics prowess to make it through. The free version includes ads, but it's a a reasonable one dollar purchase if you want them gone.

This is a twist of the classic story of The Little Red Riding Hood. This time she will face new dangers in her way through the woods, but be brave and you will succeed. The gameplay mechanics are very simple, just tap anywhere to jump to the next island. Try to collect apples, flowers and free your little bunny friends.

Deadman's Cross

Square Enix has decided to pair the tired genre of zombie shooter with the tired genre of card battle games to create one big mess of clichéd free-to-play undeath. You go out on your own to hunt zombies in a basic first-person shooter, then the zombies you kill become cards. For some reason. You fight real players and computer AI with your own personal zombie hoarded. The art is nice, but it's hard to think anyone will find many new ideas in this freemium title.

This game works only on Android version 3.0 and later. Deadman’s Cross is a zombie-themed collectible card battle RPG, and the latest creation from the same team that brought you the multimillion-download hit Guardian Cross. Sixteen years in the future, the zombie apocalypse is bitter reality as a rampant virus turns all it infects into the walking dead. How will you survive on the streets of New Livingston as Deadmen wander in search of living flesh?

Sorry, action movie fans, you don't get any points for guessing the inspiration behind There Can Be Only One. In this basic 2D brawler you take on other would-be immortals by killing them outright or pushing them off a giant stone pillar. Special attacks, power-ups, unlikely boss battles, and more than a little 8-bit humor flesh out this simple title, which spans 70 levels in total. Don't die: one loss means throwing away all your upgrades.

Pick up a magic sword on the ancient pillar of sacrifice and fight to become the 'Only One' left standing. Only One is an arena style sword fighting game where you grab a magic sword declaring yourself the 'Only One' and then proceed to push and destroy waves of enemies off a pillar in the sky. Defeat your enemies in grueling combat or take the easy way out and push them off the pillar to their deaths down below.

Helidroid 3 : 3D RC Helicopter

MH Production's latest take on the RC helicopter adds better graphics, more missions, and greater gameplay variety. It's your job to pilot one of those tricky little remote controlled choppers around various environments, using attachments to transport household goods, firing toy weapons, and generally living a little boy's perfect Saturday afternoon. In addition to various implausible mission scenarios, the game includes a free flight mode that lets you explore the house and environs.

Take the control of 3 little RC Helicopters in an entire house with garden and swimming pool. Accomplish a lot of variety of missions to become a real pilot. Control a "RC Fire" helicopter in order to take some water from the swimming pool and extinguish the fires. Use the "RC Skylift" helicopter to move objects with an electromagnet. Or choose the "RC Apache" helicopter to launch rockets and explode houses of cards.

The bottom of the sea is full of certified nightmare fuel creatures, and one of them is the angler fish. In BioGloom you use the fish's bioluminescent light to lure prey to their doom, Finding Nemo-style, while exploring a side-scrolling undersea environment. A justifiably dark aesthetic keeps things gloomy. The game is free with no in-app purchases.

BioGloom is a 2-D survival adventure game made by student team Rich Tomato from Qantm College in Brisbane, Australia. Similar to other titles, such as Osmos and Flow, comes BioGloom; a story about Lumen, an alien angler fish struggling for survival within Earth's deep oceans. Her journey will take her down into the depths where only darkness and monsters reside and Lumen's light lure is her only hope of survival.

Rakoo's Adventure

Good grief, this little endless runner is almost sickeningly cute. It's pretty basic for the genre - taps and swipes control your movement and abilities - but the colorful 2D graphics and whimsical environments should keep both kids and adults entertained. Multiple worlds, unlockable powers and costumes, and a lighthearted story (plus in-app purchases) await you in Namco's latest original mobile game.

Driven by his unrequited romantic desires, the charming but not very smart Rakoo leaves his cozy home in search of that special someone. A freshly picked flower, a goofy smile and off he goes. In his frantic race for survival, Rakoo embarks on a fantastic adventure in a world that’s as wild and beautiful as it is dangerous. Guide Rakoo through the perils and wonders that confront him with simple single-finger gameplay. Will Rakoo find the love of his dreams? His fate is in your hands.

Bad Roads 2

Mixing the endless runner/roller standard with indie gaming's favorite silhouette aesthetic, Bad Roads 2 takes the idea from Smuggle Truck and adds a coat of polish. Your job is to keep as much of your cargo in your vehicle as possible, while navigating the titular Bad Roads. There's an interesting local multiplayer mode that lets two people play on opposite sides of the same screen. Bad Roads 2 is free with ads, but there's a cheap premium version available as well.

If Minecraft and Where's My Water had a baby, it would look like Helle. the game has a very basic mythological story, but the gist is that you'll need to dig and build to solve some basic physics puzzles. As with most Minecraft-inspired games, there's a heavy online multiplayer component, encouraging strangers to work together to solve the stages. You can also access community-designed maps.

Help Helle, the Goddess of the Sea, rescue Hyacinthus who has been transformed into a flower. Dig trenches to guide water to the hyacinth flower.

Platforms Unlimited

Platforms Unlimited comes from the same developer as Don't Run With A Plasma Sword, and includes the same attitude towards ads and in-app purchases (there aren't any). The game is a super-simple endless runner, but its procedural platforms and odd physics make it surprisingly difficult. You'll have to safely traverse the basic environment and avoid the singular enemies. The game's main mode is auto-generated, but new tailored levels are unlocked each day.

Platforms Unlimited is a procedural, minimalistic, zen, madly hard one-button endless platformer. Uninventing the genre to extirpate its core. An arcade game like in the old times when simplicity, fun and challenge ruled.

This is a premium game, without IAP or ads.

The Rules:

Minimalistic: Touch the screen to jump, touch longer to jump farther.
Avoid red enemies.
The score increases by 1 every second.
Collect coins for a bonus of 4 score points. Also used for rewards.
Collect power-ups for gameplay bonuses.

Circle Stop

Ever played one of those cheesy ticket games in the arcade, where the only objective is to stop an advancing light on the right bulb? This game is like that, plus rave music. All you've got to do in Circle Stop is tap the screen at the right moment, with higher scores awarded for more accurate stops. The ball reverses direction and performs a little light show after each successful hit. The music might make you think of a zen game, but the actual mechanics make it surprisingly challenging.

Circle Stop is an addictingly simple one-button game for touch devices, from New York City's newest three person indie game studio Twenty Percent Games. As the spinner goes round and round, tap anywhere to stop it. Hit anywhere on the target to score points. Hit the bullseye for even more points. Miss the target and get a strike; three strikes and you're out. But no matter what happens, there will be explosions of colors.

Power Game

I don't know if Power Game's claim to be "Ireland's best-selling board game" is true or not, but fans of simple games like Reversi and Go should be well served by its mechanics. The object is to use a series of gears and pegs to both build the biggest simple machine and outmaneuver your opponent. It's pretty basic, but it includes Facebook integration and online play. It's two bucks plus in-app purchases.... which aren't the best mix with a multiplayer title.

Do you like Chess, Want a challenge. Here is a game that is a lot easier to learn. Having originally begin designed in 1972, it has got a complete reboot for 2013 and Android. Ireland's best selling board game has come to Android phones and Tablets in HD. The game was a hit in my other countries, it was often called Turn. Selling in excess of 10 million copies worldwide, it was considered one of the best selling strategy board games.

Do you love to exploit young people, ruthlessly profit from other people's talent, and build an enormous empire on almost no skill or merit of your own? Then you've got what it takes to be a music producer! This management game has you fostering digital talent to rake in the profits, signing new artists, producing their songs, and managing their releases. It comes from UK Music, the British equivalent of the RIAA, so it's interesting if only for the decidedly whitewashed perspective - check out the authentic money-draining piracy angle. The game is free with no IAP.

Taking on the role of a producer and owner of a start-up label, you can select artists to nurture, record their songs, then support them with marketing and band management, ultimately attempting to succeed through the sales of your artist’s recordings. As you progress, your empire grows, allowing you to expand your studios and take on more artists to conquer the charts.

Patrick Kane's Winter Games

The title is called "Winter Games," but there's only one, so if you only watch the Olympics for the hockey then this one is for you. "Hockey giant Russia is hosting the majestic WINTER GAMES," says the app description, carefully omitting mentions of "Olympics" and "Sochi." The presentation is impressive, but the basic gameplay boils down to a series of mini-games with fancy graphics.

Most zen games walk a fine line between soothing, relaxing atmosphere and challenging gameplay. Dandelions Chain of Seeds doesn't - it's a pretty basic connect-the-dots game with a simple spin mechanic. The challenge comes from ever-larger stages with more intricate webs of seeds, but any seasoned puzzle game fan should be able to beat them all in a matter of time.

Another big triple-A console release, another companion app. This time Square is rebooting the much-loved Thief franchise, and while the jury's still out on the game itself, you can tide yourself over with this app until the release next week. This isn't really a companion app in the conventional sense, it's a wrapper for bonus content, like concept art and the game soundtrack. There's also some very basic strategy guide info from Prima. You may have to pay for some new content once the full game is released.
