Google Pixel 2 can automatically switch on Do Not Disturb while you’re driving

Google announced both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL earlier this week and they both include plenty of worthwhile features. Now one more has cropped up ahead of launch.

As reported by Android Police, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have the ability to automatically switch on Do Not Disturb when you start driving. This is designed to help reduce distractions while you’re driving by blocking notifications from sounding out.

A new app called Pixel Ambient Services popped up in the Play Store and is designed to show what song is playing on your always-on display. The app will also make it possible to switch on the ability to automatically activate Do Not Disturb when you’re behind the wheel. It is found in the “Driving” section.

When switched on, it “automatically turns on Do Not Disturb while you’re in a moving vehicle.” Google says it determines the important bits by registering “device motion and Bluetooth connections,” so being paired to a Bluetooth connection in the car appears to be a necessity.

This is a similar feature to the way that Do Not Disturb While Driving works in the recently release iOS 11, which Apple launched back in September. In both cases, the devices have their notifications completely switched off, so the driver isn’t made aware that a phone call, text message, or any other app on their phone is trying to get their attention.
