Essential releases kernel source and WiFi driver, which may spark ROM development

The Essential Phone is a fantastic device with its fair share of issues. It comes from a small, new company with no experience in building a smartphone, so growing pains are to be expected. But the lack of ROM development for this phone so far has been a hindrance despite the unlockable bootloader.

Thankfully, the company is fixing this. Essential has released the kernel source and WiFi driver for the device, meaning ROM development can now begin. On top of that, factory images are coming soon.

If you’re interested in taking a look, hit the source link to the new open source section of the Essential site. We hope to see developers embrace this device much like a Nexus, because the PH-1 isn’t so different from a Nexus. Yes, that was a camera joke.
