Android 8.1 Developer Preview 1 now available

Now that Android 8.0 Oreo is out there for some devices, Google is moving ahead with the next big Android update.

Today Google announced that Android 8.1 is now available in its first developer preview. The pre-release software is build OPP5.170921.005 and it’s available for the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, and the Nexus 5X.

Google will follow a semi-regular release schedule for these developer previews, but it looks like we could see the public launch of Android 8.1 Oreo sometime in December.

As usual, this is pre-release software so there will be issues, including those related to stability. Some apps may not function properly, either, especially considering this is the first developer preview for the new software.

If you want to sign up for the Android Beta Program, head through this link. As far as what’s new, there are changes to the rate of notification sounds as well as “improved targeting for low-RAM devices” and general updates to the autofill framework. You can see the full list of changes and new additions to Android 8.1 Oreo right here.
