Xiaomi will have a presence at Google I/O 2016, rumors suggest Android TV
Xiaomi isn’t necessarily a household name in the United States right now, and while the company doesn’t appear to have plans to launch its smartphones in the U.S. anytime soon, the company’s Global Vice President has teased that there’s something big coming up.
Xiaomi’s Global VP — and former Google higher-up — Hugo Barra has taken it upon himself to start teasing a presence for the company at this year’s Google I/O. The event is set to kick off tomorrow, May 18, and run until Friday, May 20. Barra recently released two teaser images on Twitter, the first of which shows an image of “iO,” with the “i” looking quite similar to a volume control button.
The second teaser shows what appears to be buttons on what could be a video game controller. It’s not quite the Konami Code, but Xiaomi could be aiming for something spectacular anyway.
As for what Barra is teasing, it’s unknown at this point, but we don’t have long to wait to discover what it is. Rumor has it — and the teases would seem to support this theory — that Xiaomi will showcase some kind of Android TV-based set-top box. That’d be a big step in the process of selling its products to U.S.-based customers, and could perhaps be the gateway device to start selling smartphones at some point in the (near) future.
Would you buy a Xiaomi-branded Android TV box?
