New Moto X 2016 details emerge, featuring swappable back plate modules

Yesterday, leaked renders of what’s believed to be the 2016 Moto X came to light, showing off three unique designs that brought plenty of questions to the fore, too.

Some of those questions centered around the 16 connector pins seen on the back of the white model, and around that black-and-gold model in general. Now, according to a report from VentureBeat, most of those questions have been answered long before Motorola gets around to announcing its next flagship smartphone.

The report indicates that Motorola plans on introducing accessories called “Amps” for its upcoming Moto X family that will work similar to the way the modules work from LG’s G5. Specifically, 2016 Moto X owners will connect Amps to those 16 connector pins and then snap the modular back plates onto their device. The design means that the protruding camera, as you can see in the black-and-gold model, will be flush with the connected accessory.

Motorola has built at least six different Amps, which the company will unveil alongside the new handset later this year. Those packs include one that offers stereo speakers, a battery pack, a rugged cover that also offers a wide angle lens, a pico projector, and a camera rig that offers optical zoom and a flash. There are apparently third-party companies working on building Amps for the new Moto X, too.

Unfortunately, just what those Amps will cost remains a mystery.

As far as specifications go, it turns out the black-and-gold handset is a higher-end handset when compared to the white model. The device is reportedly codenamed Vector Thin, and it features a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 3/4GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, and a 16MP camera on the back outfitted with phase detection autofocus and laser autofocus. The battery is said to be measured in at 2600mAh, and the body of the handset is said to be only 5.2mm thick.

The white model is codenamed Vertex and is said to feature a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, with a 13-megapixel camera on the back with optical image stabilization and laser autofocus. The battery is measured in at 3500mAh and it’s said to feature 2/3GB of RAM and 16/32GB of built-in storage.

It certainly sounds like Motorola is planning quite the unveil later this year. Based on the rumors, are you looking forward to the new Moto X?
