LG G5 is made out of metal, but covered in thick plastic

LG states that the G5 has a metal body, and that seems to be true. But it looks like that’s not what you’re going to be feeling, so it’s a little disingenuous to be putting that in advertising. The coating on the device looks to be plastic over the metal body, and pretty thick plastic at that. JerryRigEverything conducted a teardown you can see here:

You can see that there is indeed metal under that plastic coating, but it’s no wonder people thought the phone felt like plastic. Now there are many potential reasons for why LG could have coated the device in plastic. The plastic would hide the antenna lines other metal devices have and give it a uniform look. The plastic could be grippier than metal and help prevent drops.

Unfortunately, those hoping for a premium metal construction may be disappointed. Maybe the “micro-dizing” LG spoke about refers to the colored layer outside of the plastic. Maybe it is metal, but it’s too thin to really feel like metal. Who knows, but it’s a little disappointing. What do you guys think? Does this change your opinion on the LG G5? Leave a comment!
